HUÉSPEDES DEL PRESENTE

Brand New Latin-American Schools of Creative Photography

Huéspedes del Presente [“Hosts of the present time” in Spanish] was a curatorial program that hosted in Madrid several visual artists that had been trained in recently established Latin-American academies of artistic photography. Gimnasio de Arte (México), La Fototeca (Guatemala), Madalena Workshops (Brazil) o Centro de la Imagen de Lima (Perú), are just a few examples chosen by me to illustrate the creative momentum that Latin-America is currently experiencing. A series of collective exhibitions curated by Marta Soul took place at CentroCentro exhibition Centre.

The programme also emerged from the need to establish connections between artists from different nationalities, in order to generate spaces where experiences could be shared, and eventually to contribute to the enrichment of the authors’ creative production. With this purpose in mind, Madrid hosted four one-month long artist residencies. During this time, these four Latin-American artists produced work that was also presented at the end of the residencies in an exhibition curated by Marta Soul.

Huéspedes del Presente included the participation of the following visual artists. From México: Aglae Cortés, Antero Escandón, Carlos Díaz, Mariela Sancari, Romeo Dolorosa and Melba Arellano (who was taking part in the residency programme). From Guatemala: Alejandro Medina, Ana Werren, Andrés Vargas, Fredy Murphy, Carlos David Escobar and Luigi Coguox (artist in the residency programme). From Brasil: Aline Motta, André Penteado, Carlos Enrique Siqueira, Fabio Messías, Lucas Lenci and Raquel Brust (artist in the residency programme). And from Lima: María José García Piaggio, Solange Adum, Carolina Mendoza, Diego Reaño, Diego Collado and Ricardo Yui (also taking part in the residency programme).

Huéspedes del Presente was supported by Madrid City Council (Spain), La Fototeca (Guatemala), Gimnasio de Arte (Mexico), Madalena Workshops (Brazil) and Centro de la Imagen (Peru).
